LMP and DKT Forge Memorandum of Understanding

The DKT Social Marketing Program has achieved widely recognized success by making affordable contraceptive products available in over 10,000 outlets nationwide. Much of this success has been in urban and semi-urban areas and other localities that could be considered “relatively easy” to reach. However, in spite of these achievements, reaching the poorest consumer segments and/or those located in very rural and hard-to-reach localities remain a major challenge for the Program. Alternative access for these poorest segments lies in making the products available at LGU facilities. Essentially, in support of the Government Reproductive Health Program and the Contraceptive Self-Reliance (CSR) Strategy, DKT seeks to establish partnership with LMP to strengthen its efforts in ensuring the availability of contraceptive supplies at the LGU facilities, as well as to implement IE&C activities for the target consumers. This was discussed in a meeting with the League of Municipalities in the Philippines (LMP) last August 5, 2005. In this connection, DKT proposes various activities that will be done in coordination with LMP. These activities are part of the two categories under the CSR:

  1. To assist in understanding measures to guarantee local availability of contraceptives
  2. To assist in the conduct of campaigns and IE&C activities for LGUs and LGU officials

Details of these activities are as follows:

  1. Establishing a Support Mechanism to Make Contraceptive Products Available through the LGU Facilities.
  2. IE&C Activities for LGUs and LGU Officials
  3. Coordination and Monitoring
  4. Timeframe
    DKT proposes that this understanding take effect on September 1, 2005 and shall be effective for a period of one (1) year and renewable every year.
